As knitters, we know that big things are possible when you work a lot of tiny stitches together. Please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice in support of Ukraine – no gift is too small. Here are links to the websites of some of the charities active in Ukraine right now:
(Update Mar 22) Donate directly to Ukraine
The government of Ukraine has set up a humanitarian aid website with a lot of information about ways you can donate and support the people of Ukraine. The dashboard lists some of the most pressing needs for goods, but (as always) the quickest and most efficient way to help would be to donate cash directly so the people on the ground can make their own decisions about what is most desperately needed at any given time.
UNHCR has stepped up our operations and capacity in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. We remain firmly committed to support all affected populations in Ukraine and countries in the region.
Your support can help ensure that Ukrainians forced to flee their homes are sheltered and safe.
You can make a difference and bring hope to refugees today with a 100% tax-deductible donation to UNHCR. Our supporters make our work possible—only 1% of UNHCR’s budget comes from the UN.
The Government of Canada will match all eligible donations—not exceeding $100,000—made by individual Canadians to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal between February 24, 2022 and March 18, 2022, up to a maximum of $10 million.UPDATE: AS OF MARCH 1, THE MATCH HAS BEEN FULFILLED – GOOD WORK EVERYBODY! DONATE ANYWAY!
Chef & humanitarian José Andrés (on Twitter @chefjoseandres) and the staff of WSC are in several places on the Ukraine borders, cooking and serving hot meals to refugees. This is a US-registered charity, so donations are not tax-deductable in Canada.
March 4, 2022. TORONTO/OTTAWA – Today, the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal announced a further $1,070,000 CAD of aid to be delivered early next week.
The UCC-CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal had already deployed approximately $550,000 CAD to provide food packages, medicine and shelter. Today’s announcement brings that total to $1.62M CAD. Subsequent tranches of support will follow as we monitor and confirm prior deliveries of support, and assess the evolving needs.
As of March 3, 2022 MSF’s Ukrainian operations are based out of the relatively calm city of Lviv in Western Ukraine. It is co-ordinating with Ukrainian hospitals to assess their needs, restock medical supplies, especially surgical supplies to deal with mass casualties that are running low. Supplies are being trucked in.
Please note that MSF’s policy is not to raise money for a specific appeal. Donations will be used for all of MSF’s work. That said, looking back over prior crises, MSF spends more on disaster response than other charities which have special emergency appeals.
